Welcome to the group! / Re: A question about teaching flute
« Last post by abbiejanna on January 12, 2019, 03:06:18 pm »
So we had a chat about this today - my suggestions were: check with Mum that there isn't an actual reason you don't know about, tell her it's important to develop stamina for standing, start with half the lesson sitting then half standing, if she has to sit make sure she sits really well so her torso is the same as when she's standing. I wouldn't want to make too much of it so it doesn't become a "thing".....

Welcome to the group! / A question about teaching flute
« Last post by Ali on January 10, 2019, 02:45:04 pm »
Hi Abby and Janna - I have a question about teaching flute to children. I have a student who doesn't like to stand during lessons. I don't think there are any physical reasons for it, she just doesn't like standing the whole time. I have never had a problem with a student not wanting to stand before and am just wondering whether it is a big deal if she has her lessons sitting down as long as she has a good posture? I'm wondering how much of an 'issue' I should make it. What do other teachers do? Flute is her second instrument - she is a pianist and I suppose she's used to sitting down for that.

I'm working on this at the moment. Has anyone here played it before?

Any advice for me?

Here's another link to information on Syrinx for when we start to look at it, for those who are interested...
The most interesting bit is that it should be played behind the scenes, in the wings where no one can see the flutist. What is THAT about?!? Send the clarinettist off at least, not the flute.

I'm with you Ali with regard to Emmanuel Pahud. The combination of Emmanuel Pahud and Debussy... what more could a girl ask for!  :)

Hi everyone!! I've just joined the forum - how fab is this. So I found a link to Debussy's Syrinx on youtube. Emmanuel Pahud of course (my pin up Flute Man. If my husband would let me have a poster of him on my wall I would. Sadly he said no ;)
Anyway, hopefully the link will work. If it doesn't, you can always search for it on youtube...

Hey why doesn't everyone list their absolute favourite Flute CD (or 2) at the moment! Would make interesting reading.

Rachel Brown's Quantz recordings (or anything baroque by her in fact!), anything at all with Michael Cox, dear old Emanuel Pahud, Emily Benyon, I quite like Sharon Bezaly too, it's a WIDE topic!! Great idea to listen to lots of players - it does help to broaden your own ideas about sound and expression in playing.
Have fun!
x Janna
